The aim of this IRC is to bring together scholars who are working on the interaction between lawyers and state transformations. We draw strength from the six-year project Lawyers in 21st-Century Societies, spearheaded by R. Abel, O. Hammerslev, H. Sommerlad, and U. Schultz, which was formalized as an IRC and produced two volumes tracing changes in legal professions across the world since the landmark three-volume Lawyers in Society (volume I, Hart 2020) and continental, thematic and methodological trends (volume II, Hart, forthcoming). This IRC suggests shifting the focus from the category of legal professions towards an exploration of state transformations.
