Professor Baxi teaches at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. Baxi’s analysis reveals how gendered violence is reproduced by juridical practice. Her work combines legal studies, sociology, and anthropology and has influenced a growing field of inquiry into the social life of law.
Professor Baxi’s book Public Secrets of Law: Rape Trials in India (Oxford University Press, 2013) describes the everyday sociolegal processes that underlie the making of rape trials in Indian courts. It demonstrates how rape trials furnish scripts of the social via the juridicalized bodies of violated women.
Professor Baxi also initiated the formation of the Law and Social Sciences Research Network, anchored at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2007. LASSnet is an interdisciplinary network, which has brought together more than 500 scholars, researchers and lawyers from different parts of the world. She additionally serves on the LSA International Committee.
